R Ashwin Recalls MS Dhoni's Words After 2011 West Indies Series

R Ashwin recently recalled the Mumbai Test against West Indies in 2011, which ended as a draw with the scores level. Notably, it was the only second game which was ended this way.

While chasing 243, India required three runs in the last over on Day 5 which was bowled by pacer Fidel Edwards, whereas they had two wickets in hand. Tailender Varun Aaron gave the strike to Ashwin, who had scored a century in the first innings and brought the equation to 2 off 2.

Ashwin then tried to flick the penultimate ball but got an inside edge onto his pad leaving India 2 to score in the final ball. He then hit the ball to the deep and showed no urgency to take the second run. The scores were levelled, but India was not all out, so the game was declared drawn and not tied. Post the game, MS Dhoni had a word with Ashwin and the veteran spinner has recently shared that.

"After the game, MS Dhoni came to me and said, ‘You could have taken a chance in the previous ball. Probably taken a single, and let Varun Aaron slog one off the last ball’. So yeah, that’s hindsight,” Ashwin told Pakistan journalist Mazher Arshad in a Youtube interview.

He further added, “I was pretty young into international cricket and that time whatever I was touching was turning into gold. I had got the MoM in the first Test then I got married in between and then came back to play the Mumbai Test. In the final innings, we looked good to chase, but all of a sudden, we had a collapse. I didn’t want to risk going for a big shot, and then, the next batsman coming in and getting out. Fidel Edwards was getting it to reverse and it would have been difficult for a No.11. we could lose the Test match, from being in a position of strength, it was not even 50-50."

However, he also had to bear the consequences soon after the match as he was criticised on social media for not taking the second run. Although he didn’t take the second run, Ashwin was awarded the Man of the Series for claiming 22 wickets in three games. He was also the Man of the Match as well.

Irfan Pathan Reveals the Similarity Between Sourav Ganguly & Virat Kohli

India have produced several captains over the years and former India captain Sourav Ganguly and current captain Virat Kohli are among them. Although the debate can go on who has been India's best skipper among them, both Ganguly and Kohli have similarities as captain as both are known for their aggressive captaincy and never give up attitude.

Apart from the above qualities, there is another striking similarity between the two and former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan revealed that recently.

“He is very similar to Sourav Ganguly as well. A guy who backs his youngsters really, really well. Virat Kohli has that aura about him, that he goes out of his way to back the youngsters,” Pathan said in the latest episode of Star Sports chat show Cricket Connected. “We have seen that with Rishabh Pant, we have seen the press conferences, he goes and says, ‘No, we need to back a guy like Rishabh Pant purely on his potential’.”

While the ICC T20 World Cup has postponed, it has opened the window for the 13th edition of Indian Premier League. Moreover, India will also travel to Australia in December where they will paly a four-match Test series, and former captain and now the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said that he expects the team to win again. Last time India won the series against them when they toured to Australia in 208 under Virat Kohli's leadership.

“I have said that to Virat also,” Ganguly said to India Today in an interview. “I said, ‘because you’re Virat Kohli, your standards are high. When you walk to play, when you walk with your team, I, watching on TV, don’t expect you to just play well against Australia. I expect you to win. So for me, that is what it is. Because you have set the standards. It’s not anybody else. So you have to live up to the standards’.”

Harbhajan Singh Confident About His Own Skills

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh backs himself to return in the squad even at 40. He is considered one of the best spinners in the country as well. He thinks age at one level is over-rated who has played103 Tests and 236 ODIs for India as well.

"If you still want to test me by pitting me for a battle of skills against those youngsters you consider best in the business, please bring it on," Harbhajan, who has taken 235 wickets, said. "You can talk about age if the ball while fielding goes between your legs or your knees are gone or you have done in shoulder which is the reason you can't give that force.”

"But yes, I have been on the field wearing those India colours for at least 800 days (playing time). I have been an achiever who doesn't need anyone's sympathy. But yes, if it's about skills, bring the best in India and I am still ready," he said.

Despite last playing for India way back in 2016, he is a regular face in the cash-rich league Indian Premier League where he used to play for one of the best teams - Mumbai Indians earlier and later went to play for another best team – Chennai Super Kings. However, the experienced spinner also thinks that he can be at his best even after not playing domestic cricket as he has played enough amount of top-level cricket.

While talking about his 22-year-long journey, he said that he used to treat every day like an exam where a lot of papers went well and he got marks at one end, while on the other, he didn’t do well how he liked to do. However, the spinner with 711 international wickets across formats is ready to take part in the 13th edition of Indian Premier League. It was earlier scheduled to take place in March but eventually got postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and it will take place later this year.

Anne Rice criticized Tom Cruise’s cast in Interview With The Vampire

One of the most admired actors in Hollywood, Tom Cruise has stepped in his 58th year today. While the star has accounted for incredible fame within the big screen, reports have stated that he didn’t seem to be the favourite in everyone's casting selections. And that came out evident in the 1994 movie, ‘Interview With The Vampire’ which starred him and Brad Pitt as lead characters.

The penetrating dissatisfaction

The film happens to be an adaptation of a book with the same title penned by Anne Rice. But unfortunately, the author herself couldn’t agree with Tom’s role in the film until it garnered a huge response from the audience.

A weird choice

At that time, Anne recorded her statement while speaking about producer David Geffen and director Neil Jordan’s decision of casting the actor in the film. She told Movieline, "The Tom Cruise casting is so bizarre, it’s almost impossible to imagine how it’s going to work. Does Tom Cruise have any idea of what he’s getting into? I’m not sure he does. … His comments on TV that he wanted to do something scary and he loved ‘creature features’ as a kid, well, that didn’t make me feel any better. … the choice is just so bizarre.” Yes, you read it right which points at the cast of Lestat de Lioncourt. It sounds, the choice of the masterminds simply pissed off the author’s vision.

Triumphing millions of hearts

But lastly, her perceptions received a good jolt as the film was declared to be a box office hit in its release which accounted for numerous positive feedbacks. The massive appreciation, however, compelled Anne to seek an apology from the actor. Apart from that, she also published an advertisement in Vanity Fair and The New York Times calling the film adaptation “a masterpiece". Although her views had initially disappointed the fandom, it strengthened the star’s stand like never before.

Under his guidance, India U-19 team won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the final in 2020 as well.

"After I finished (playing), there were quite a few options and I was not sure what to do. It was Kapil Dev who gave me this advice actually when I was coming to the end of my career," Dravid told the head coach of India women's team, WV Raman, on his chat show 'Inside Out'. "I bumped into him somewhere and he said 'Rahul, don't commit to doing anything straightaway, go out and spend a few years just exploring and doing different things and see what you really like'. The great batsman, who amassed 13288 runs from 164 Tests between 1996 and 2012 and currently the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru said that te BCCI took a right decision on their U-19 teams. With that, a pool of 45 to 50 players can get the exposure to the facilities at NCA where they can have good coaches, good physios, good trainers and whatever required.
